SEARCHING FOR A NEW JOB?

March 11th, 2006

The question I’m asked more than any other is how much time should an individual spend each day on their job search.

The answer is simple: If you are unemployed, your full time job is to search for a new opportunity. Every day you should research the companies you have targeted. You should send out TEN new resumes with a cover letter daily, as well as contact by phone the TEN resumes you sent out the week before. It takes that type of focused effort to land the opportunity of your dreams.

If you are currently employed you need to focus on your search two hours per day. Your lunch hour and one hour every evening when you get home from work. If you are working, it many times is also effective to work with a search firm. They can work for you while you are at work earning a living.

In either scenario - you reap what you sow. I speak with individual every day who tell me they have been looking for a job for MONTHS! When I ask them how many resumes they send out daily, they are NOT sending out resumes daily. When I ask how many follow-up calls they make once they do send out their resume, they are not following-up. When I ask how many face-to-face interviews they have had in the last three months - often that answer is NONE. That is not a job search!

You need to put the same intensity, dedication and tenancity into your job search and you did in your last position. If you get this type of activity going, it will greatly increase your chances of landing a new job!
