CUSTOMIZE YOUR COVER LETTERS

August 20th, 2006

It is very important that you customize your cover letters when you are submitting your resume. You will immediately improve your chances of scheduling an interview, when the hiring authority realizes you have taken the time to focus on what is important to them.

Your cover letter should be four paragraphs:

Paragraph One:
This paragraph should identify your purpose

Paragraph Two:
This paragraph should emphasize what you can do for this employer. Address the WIIFM “what’s in it for me” of this decidion maker.

Paragraph Three:
This paragraph should pin down the interview availability of your candidate

Paragraph Four:
This paragraph should CLOSE your decision maker, again stressing what this person can put on the table.

If you have a copy of a job posting, make sure you are stressing the experience and skills you possess that
fit the job specifications. If not, research the company prior to sending your resume so you have an accurate understanding of this company and reach any and all current articles you can find on the company. You want to sound informed during the interview.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:
1. Make sure you have the correct name and title of the decision maker
2. Handwrite the envelope
3. Write personal and confidential in the left bottom corner of the envelope
(these are the only envelopes this person’s secretary will NOT open)
4. Write down your interview availability - realizing they may expect you to interview when it is convenient
for them not you.
5. Include one reference letter if you have one.
